Too much traffic and not enough parking are legacies of poorly planned growth. Mass transit, light rail and enlightened land use may reduce our reliance on cars... but what do we do now? Traffic can't be stopped, but can be made safer. Effective vehicle and pedestrian safety measures combine the three E's: enforcement, education and engineering. We're always searching for better engineering solutions that won't inconvenience the law-abiding or lengthen public safety response times. I continue to support protection for residents' ability to park safely near their homes, but there must be more to our parking strategy than exclusive permit parking zones. Sharing our street parking among residents and businesses has a hidden neighborhood benefit. It delays the demolition and redevelopment of human-scale stores, restaurants and offices to make way for behemoths with underground parking. |

| Musical chairs was a fun game, despite the chagrin of being left without a seat. Less fun is finding yourself without a parking space in your own neighborhood...
