READER HOTLINE (Letters to the Editor)
The accelerating eviction of Santa Monica Section 8 tenants whose
landlords opt out of HUD contracts is a disgrace and an emergency.
We must immediately find a way to make up the difference between
what the truly desperate can afford and their units' costs under
Santa Monica rent control, meanwhile lobbying for corrections
in federal policies.
An attorney is quoted in your article, "The nice landlords are
always the ones who get punished." There's nothing nice, and much
shameful, about evicting an elderly or disabled tenant. For some
of our aged and ill neighbors, a forced eviction is... let's not
mince words... potentially fatal.
Can we as a community work together for no displacements until
a long-term solution is found?
