Montana Avenue has grown from a neighborhood-serving street of small shops to a world-famous strip of restaurants, boutiques, and other regional attractions.

Despite this growth and transformation, Montana Avenue has not had a specific and comprehensive planning process. A "Montana Avenue Streetscape Plan" was suggested in the early 90's, but it was never fully developed and the only lasting result was a restriping of the roadway.

Back in March of 1999, just three months in office, I introduced the concept of a Montana Avenue Master Plan.

On May 23, 2000, fourteen months later, the City Council passed an emergency interim ordinance limiting further development on Montana while the Master Plan is generated.

The Aero Theater has been saved! The very night we passed the temporary Montana ordinance, Robert Redford's Sundance Cinemas announced the signing of a deal to preserve and enhance Montana Avenue's historic Aero Theater.
Setbacks in a parent corporation snatched that rescue from our grasp... but City, neighborhood and private efforts to save the Aero Theater continued. In stepped American Cinematheque, operators of Hollywood's famed Egyptian Theater, and as of 2005 our historic Aero Theater is reopened as a classic showcase for great movies.

We hope the Aero will anchor a vibrant Montana Avenue with a new focus on neighborhood-serving business and community compatibility. Meanwhile, while workshops and public hearings are held on the Master Plan, the size of new buildings on Montana has been scaled back and additional incidental food uses and new sidewalk seating have been limited.
