I'm not your garden-variety or mountain-top environmentalist, I guess. I'm more of an urban environmentalist, committed to protecting our planet from the sadly unwise things we do when we live too close together and lose touch with our natural environment. [Green Technology]
I'm exceedingly proud, therefore, of what we in Santa Monica are doing to live light on the land and preserve our planet. All our City facilities run off renewal resource electricity, with our Pier's solar-powered Ferris wheel as an icon of our commitment. Also at the Pier, a wastewater reclamation facility spares Santa Monica Bay and provides recycled water for irrigation.

Santa Monica's Green Building Guidelines mean ecologically wise new public and private projects. Our citywide commingled recycling program makes waste reduction not only effective but convenient.

We are working closely with our schools to cut their electricity costs and encourage conservation through a City-funded $500,000 energy efficiency program.
[pic of my Prius] My personal car is an electric hybrid. So, now, are an increasing number of City staff cars. They join a City fleet of electric, CNG and other alternative fuel vehicles. Our Big Blue Buses are going CNG, and our Tide Shuttle is completely electric!
All this environmental awareness is spurred by Santa Monica's Sustainable City Guidelines. We're working now on revised guidelines for the new century, looking at wider realms of achievable sustainability and considering our City's relative ecological footprint.
