McKeown Enters Council Race
Santa Monica community and neighborhood organizer Kevin McKeown
took out papers July 13 to run for City Council in the November
election.
McKeown has been chair of the Wilshire/Montana Neighborhood Coalition,
and recently assisted in the formation of the new North of Montana
Association. He's been a member of Santa Monica's Telecommunications
Working Group, and for six years he's served on the Santa Monica-Malibu
Unified School District Advisory Committee on Instructional Technology.
McKeown's issues include citywide neighborhood concerns over the
cumulative effect of planning decisions on traffic, parking, the
environment and the quality of life. He organized a joint neighborhood
committee on parks, and has been outspoken on the need for Santa
Monica to acquire additional parkland.
As a computer and networking consultant working with the Santa
Monica-Malibu Unified School District, McKeown has taken a lead
role in connecting education and technology to create a networked
lifelong learning community in Santa Monica.
McKeown has been a consistent voice in the city's debate over
appropriate affordable housing policy, insisting that neighborhoods
and residents be protected against displacements and a net loss
of existing affordable housing.
"And," he said, "This may sound pedestrian, but I want to bring
back safe crosswalks!"
