Santa Monica

Councilmember Kevin McKeown

Santa Monica is known for environmentalism, and for our stewardship of Santa Monica Bay and the ocean beyond, so the news that a restaurant at our airport was caught serving endangered species whale meat sushi was quite a shock.

Here’s what I told KNBC Ch4 reporter Angie Crouch about some actions we might take beyond simple enforcement of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Update: the restaurant was permanently closed, and the chefs face up to three years of jail time for importing and selling meat from federally protected sei whales.
