McKeown describes his background as coming from a family of “Adlai Stevenson Democrats.” He has been a delegate to the California Democratic Party, was vice chair of the Irish-American Caucus at his first state convention, attended the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, and has participated in progressive Democratic activities, including the Santa Monica Democratic Club.
Locally, McKeown can be seen at many community meetings, ranging from the neighborhood group Wilshire Montana Neighborhood Association (Wilmont) which he formerly chaired, to community meetings on urban forestry and public transit.
"Santa Monica is the perfect place to live, to work, and to help create a community based on shared ideals of social justice, public education, and sustainable stewardship of our natural environment,” says McKeown. “I'm honored to have my small efforts in our small town acknowledged by the Democratic Party."
State Senator Fran Pavley says of McKeown: “In his three terms as a Santa Monica City Council Member, Kevin McKeown has proven to be a dedicated public servant. He understands that his job is to represent the residents of Santa Monica and not special interest groups. He has long been a champion of education, public safety, small businesses, affordable housing, and the environment…. He is a natural leader who does not back away from tough issues and has always been a thoughtful, genuine and charismatic individual. Congratulations to you, Kevin. I can't think of a better person to be named as a Democrat of the Year for the 41st Assembly District."
Julia Brownley, State Assemblymember, 41st District, comments: "Kevin McKeown is widely considered the conscience of the progressive movement in Santa Monica. His commitment to affordable housing, slow and responsible growth, environmental responsibility and social justice is second to none. I was thrilled to hear that Kevin was selected for this well deserved honor."
The Los Angeles County Democratic Party will honor Councilmember McKeown along with other activists at its annual Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Dinner in July.
