| The year 2020 may seem a long way off, but a child who was born in Santa Monica in 1999 will reach 21, the age of majority, in 2020. That's why I called my plan for our future Santa Monicans a "2020 vision." With working parents, single parents and often the lack of extended family, we challenge children in our society as never before. Rather than decry the often tragic results of unnurtured childhoods, let's take positive action here in Santa Monica to provide community parenting. If we commit ourselves right now to improved and extended family and infant services, and every year we add another year's worth of programs for toddlers, then children, then youth, teens and young adults, by 2020 we will have a generation of Santa Monicans who have felt community support every year of their young lives. A year at a time, beginning now, working together, we can fulfill this 2020 vision. As part of our 2000-2001 budget, the City Council allocated an additional $250,000 annually to subsidizing child development for low-income families. It's a start! |
